Sara is a wonderful new talent that we are proud to present to our clients and friends. While her work is certainly not limited to portraits, her inspired depictions of the Blessed Virgin and other Saints are at the same time haunting and uplifting. Completely Self-Taught, Sara's work is making its way into important collections throughout the U.S. and abroad. Sara Morsey In her own words... I
am an emerging talent in the world of Outsider
Art/Visionary/Naive/Kitsch. My
work can already be found in collections across the United States and in
Eastern and Western Europe. I
have been making art my entire life.
For years I gave it away as gifts.
Only in the last three or four years have I become prolific. I think this is partly because I have a studio in my home now
and can create any time of the day or night.
This latest phase in my growth as a self-taught artist began a
few years ago when a local gallery put out a call for
"altars." Mine
featured a somewhat unconventional four foot tall painting of the
Blessed Virgin. I started
painting lots of saints and Marys and when I let some friends see my
work they said, "You are an Outsider Artist."
This was the first time I had heard the term.
I've classified myself that way ever since, although the more I
learn about the art form, the more humbled I am to include myself in the
category. I
always feel inspired to make art, but the art I make varies. I feel I always paint from a very spiritual place inside
myself, but sometimes more humor and "kitsch" slips into the
art piece. When I'm
painting at my best, the paintings make themselves.
I like to use recycled materials in my art as much as possible,
often painting on found wood or tin (or whatever). Mostly I work with
acrylics, but also use oils and collage and some assemblage along with
pen and ink. I'm
blessed with art in every aspect of my life, having been a professional
actor for more than twenty years. As a member of Actors Equity
Association I have mainly acted in regional professional theatres across
the United States and in a few independent films, but have also traveled
as far as the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and to The National Palace of
Culture in Sofia, Bulgaria to appear in staged works. I believe the arts have the power to heal us and join us if we let them. |
