Buddy Snipes (1943)

James A. "Buddy" Snipes was born on October 30, 1943 in Macon County, Alabama. He is the last child in a family that includes twelve children.

Growing up poor in Alabama, young Buddy faced the hardships that were common to poor people in the American South. Often sick as a child, there was no money for medical care. The Snipes family relied on home remedies and did the best they could for James. Buddy attended school off and on, but soon dropped out altogether.

Buddy worked odd jobs as a laborer, mostly cutting pulp wood. He would also make wagons and pushcarts from wood scraps for extra money. He began to make pieces of art from cast-off objects like pieces of scrap lumber, twigs, roots, vines, tobacco tins, and anything else that inspired his fertile imagination. Now, well into his sixties, Buddy supports himself exclusively with his art.

A private man, Buddy does not like to talk about himself and has to be coaxed into having his photo taken.
