Brian Dowdall (1948)

Brian was born on February 12, 1948, in Anaconda, Montana.

While a youngster, Brian spent a lot of time walking the Montana Mountain Trails. Brian's love for animals grew out of his Montana childhood.

With High School behind him, young Brian traveled extensively. He spent most of the 1960's hitchhiking across America. Brian would camp most anywhere he could pitch a tent - national forests, caves, and wilderness areas.

Brian spent a good deal of time in Puerto Marquez, Mexico, living with an Indian friend, in a makeshift home cobbled together from an old animal barn. It was in Mexico that Brian perfected his craft, painting untold numbers of "animal spirit paintings" with house paint on scrap pieces of the local newspaper.

Brian senses the energy patterns of animals and interprets them as pure color which fills and surrounds their form. Brian forms his creations by applying tempura and house paint to cast-off cardboard.

Brian's work is in many very important collections including those of:

Herb Hemphill, Dr. Kurt Gitter, Chuck and Jan Rosenak, Betty Carol Sellen, Johnathan Demme, Dave Brubeck, Johnny and June Carter Cash, and Van Morrison.
