Sybil Gibson (1908 - 1995)

Sybil Gibson, from Dora Alabama, was one of the most gifted painters America has ever produced. With her rich use of color and distinctive application technique, Sybil was able to convey emotion in her work as no other artist before or since.

She would paint mostly on paper grocery sacks, wetting them and then applying tempura before the paper was dry. The effect she created was immediately evident and moves the viewer at a deep emotional level. The images of faces and florals that she produced are haunting and elevating, as if seen through a veil of confusion, but not without hope.

Sadly, Sybil lived most of her life in poverty due to an unpredictable nature and many of her works were lost due to Sybil's own irresponsibility. Nonetheless, her work is highly prized and extensively collected, with pieces included in many important collections including the Birmingham Museum of Art,the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, The Museum of American Folk Art in New York and the New Orleans Museum of Art in Louisiana.
