Hazel Bateman Kinney (1929)

Born in Toller Hollow, Kentucky, Hazel married Noah Kinney, brother of Charley Kinney in 1960. She started painting after she moved in with her husband at the Kinney farm. Hazel, Noah, and Charley lived through a very unsettling time in history, which was marked by never-before-seen technological, economic, cultural, and political upheaval. These changes completely altered the Kinney brothers way of life and the way they viewed the world. The culture that they had inherited from their parents was all but obliterated during their lifetime.

The Kinneys kept alive a way of life that has now all but disappeared. Their importance in American Culture can't be overstated. Their story is prominent in the History of Kentucky.

"The Kinney brothers are the stuff from which myths and legends so easily arise," said KFAC Curator Adrian Swain. "As artists and musicians, Charley and Noah were local standard bearers of their culture, and of a way of life that they adhered to long after most others had abandoned it for generic late 20th century America. All that discussion notwithstanding, the art is powerful; it stirs your gut. The Kinneys are the real thing."
